If there's one thing I've learned from exploring Kansas, it's this: the Sunflower State hides some of the most delightful surprises. Case in point? Lindsborg, a town so proudly Swedish that even the street corners feel like they're humming Abba ballads (well, they were actually speakers with songs from musicals - LOVE!) and sipping lingonberry punch.

Dala Horses & Dancing Dreams

If there's one thing I adore about travel, it's stumbling upon a place that feels both wonderfully unexpected and instantly welcoming. That's exactly what happened when I arrived in Lindsborg, Kansas, affectionately known as Little Sweden, USA.

From the moment you roll into town, you're greeted by cheerful Dala horses, Scandinavian storefronts, and a warm community proud of its heritage. With help from the lovely folks at Visit Lindsborg, I spent a full day exploring, dancing, eating, shopping, and soaking up Swedish-American culture in this delightful Kansas town.

This adventure was brought to life with the wonderful support of Kansas Tourism and Visit Wichita, the dream team who helped me uncover the small-town magic, big-sky beauty, and unforgettable stories tucked across the Sunflower State.

Now let's wander through Little Sweden together.

🇸🇪 Downtown Lindsborg: A Whimsical Stroll

Downtown Lindsborg is one of those places that feels like it leaped straight out of a storybook. Cheerful shops, vibrant murals, and Dala horses-everywhere. I swear, if I saw one trot up for a cup of coffee, I wouldn't even question it. The whole downtown has a cool, trendy vibe that makes it a fun spot to explore and hang out.

I spent the morning wandering from storefront to storefront, peeking into Scandinavian gift shops filled with unique Dala horses, Swedish souvenirs, and local art, admiring folk art, and falling in love with wooden carvings I absolutely did not need but definitely wanted.

You'll find everything from traditional textiles to whimsical holiday ornaments to gorgeous handmade jewelry, exactly the kind of treasures that make a place unforgettable.

📸 Small World Gallery: Art, Photography, and Kansas Magic

A must-visit is Small World Gallery, home to the internationally renowned photography of Jim Richardson. Yes, it's the same Jim Richardson whose work you've seen in National Geographic.

A store front with a green awning with the words Small World Gallery

Stepping into the gallery feels like stepping into a story, images of Kansas skies, Scottish landscapes, and faraway places line the walls with quiet beauty. Jim's photographs radiate emotion, light, and narrative in a way that makes even the Flint Hills feel epic and ancient. His wife, Kathy's, handcrafted jewelry is equally stunning.

I wandered slowly through the collection, taking in the artistry and Kansas pride in every frame. If you're even mildly artsy, or travel-obsessed, or Kansas-curious, this place is a must.

More art in Lindsborg!

Art lovers will adore Lindsborg's creative side. In addition to Small World Gallery, be sure to visit the Red Barn Studio Museum, the former home and workshop of local artist Lester Raymer. Bursting with color, whimsy, and handcrafted wonders, it's one of the most inspiring art galleries in Kansas.

The Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery is also worth a visit, as it not only showcases Sandzén's work but features pieces by other artists such as Henry Varnum Poor, Doel Reed, Lester Raymer, and more, highlighting the gallery's diverse collection.

And while exploring town, keep your eyes peeled for the wild Dala horses, artist-designed sculptures scattered like a cheerful scavenger hunt.

🏨 Where to Stay in Lindsborg KS

My home base for the night was the oh-so-dreamy Dröm Sött Inn, Sweet Dreams Inn, a lovingly restored Swedish-style guesthouse with cozy rooms and delightful, friendly hospitality. For a dreamy place to stay, look no further than Dröm Sött Inn - Sweet Dreams Inn.

The inn blends Scandinavian simplicity with warm Kansas charm. Think crisp linens, tasteful blues and whites, and décor that makes you feel wrapped in a hygge hug. Breakfast in the morning? Delicious and quite the selection! I absolutely loved the gluten free Swedish pancakes and meatballs!

Location? Steps from everything.

If you're traveling to Lindsborg, make this your home-away-from-Sweden.

☕️ Lunch & Sips at BlackSmith Coffee

By midday, I was ready for caffeine and something delicious, and BlackSmith Coffee delivered both. This is one of those cafés where you immediately want to plop down with a book and stay for two hours… which I would have, but we were in a hurry to explore the town!

I ordered a chicken salad lunch that tasted like it had been made with actual love, and possibly Scandinavian sunshine. Paired with a perfectly brewed in-house coffee, it was the ideal midday recharge for an afternoon of dancing (more on that soon!).

If you're looking to enjoy a drink, whether it's their signature coffee or another beverage, BlackSmith Coffee is the perfect spot to relax and soak in the atmosphere.

💃 The Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers: Dancing Dreams Come to Life

If there's one experience that captures the heart and soul of Lindsborg, it's watching the Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers bring tradition to life, one twirl, step, and joyful clap at a time.

What I didn't expect was that I'd be dancing right alongside them.

A picture of a group of people smiling at the camera, many of whom are dressed in traditional Swedish dance costumes

The performance I attended featured both the high school troupe and the adult group, and together they created a multigenerational celebration of culture that absolutely stole my heart.

The high school dancers, mostly 9th graders just beginning their folk dance journey, performed with such enthusiasm and pride. You could see how much they were learning, how much fun they were having, and how meaningful it was to be part of something bigger than themselves.

And then there were the adults: skilled, graceful, confident, and clearly passionate about passing on tradition. They didn't just perform, they mentored the teens, guiding them through steps, supporting them with big smiles, and keeping the spirit of Swedish dance alive through community.

After the performance, something magical happened:

They invited us, yes, the audience, to join them.

Both the high schoolers and the adults teamed up to teach us a traditional Swedish dance. Imagine a room full of visitors, teens, seasoned dancers, and one mildly confused but excited travel blogger all stepping together in rhythm (or at least trying to). Laughter echoed, skirts swished, clogs tapped, and suddenly we weren't just watching the culture, we were part of it.

This moment, hand in hand with dancers of all ages, learning a Swedish folk dance in the middle of Kansas, was one of the purest, happiest surprises of my entire trip.

The high schoolers even told us about something I absolutely loved:

Every student in the program has the opportunity to travel to Sweden on an exchange trip.

It's an incredible way to deepen their experience and connect with heritage firsthand. Between the mentorship of the adults and this life-changing travel opportunity, it's no wonder the program feels so vibrant and proud.

Culture celebrated, shared, and lived, right here in Kansas.

🌄 Coronado Heights: A Castle on the Prairie

Just outside town rises Coronado Heights, a sandstone outcrop topped with a 1930s WPA castle that looks like it belongs in a fairytale. The winding road to the top gives sweeping views of the prairie, golden, open, endless. Several trails and features extend for miles south of the city, connecting Lindsborg to other scenic areas in Kansas.

Sunset up here is spectacular. The rolling fields catch fire with color, and the wind seems to carry every story this land has ever held.

It's one of the most peaceful, beautiful spots in Kansas.

🏛️ Dinner at the Swedish Pavilion - Old Mill Museum

That evening, I headed to the Swedish Pavilion at the Old Mill Museum, a truly unique and historical experience.

A grassy area in front of a traditional windmill, train station building and small red barn

The Pavilion itself originated as a structure from the 1904 World's Fair and was later moved to Lindsborg, where it continues to be a cultural treasure. During special events and dinners, it becomes a gathering place where Swedish traditions and Midwest hospitality meet.

The Old Mill Museum is home to the fascinating Swedish Heritage Museum, where you'll discover stories of the Swedish immigrants who founded the area.

Explore the exhibits, wander through the historic blacksmith shop, and imagine the early days of prairie life along the nearby Smoky Hill River. It's history brought vividly to life.

While on the grounds, make time to explore:

  • The Old Mill
  • The Heritage Museum
  • Historic machinery
  • Cultural exhibits
  • Their seasonal events, like Millfest (held annually on the first Saturday of May), Holiday traditions, and special concerts

It's a beautiful, meaningful peek into Lindsborg's past, and its dedication to preserving Swedish culture today.

🍻 Nightcap at Öl Stuga (Ol Stuga)

To end the night the Lindsborg way, I headed to Ol Stuga, the local pub beloved by residents and travelers alike.

Ol Stuga painted on white on the side of a brown brick building with a Dala horse sign in front

Ol Stuga is known for its great food and relaxed vibe, making it a popular college town hangout. One of its signature menu items is the Brent Nelson sandwich, named after a customer who frequently requested this unique creation that wasn't originally on the menu. The Brent Nelson has since become a local favorite, celebrated by both residents and visitors.

With its comforting menu and the perfect evening atmosphere, this was the ideal place to recap the day's adventures and laugh with new friends.

If Little Sweden has a living room, this is it.

🛍️ Shopping in Little Sweden: Treasures to Take Home

Of course, I couldn't leave Lindsborg without a little more shopping. Visitors will find plenty of unique shops and treasures in Little Sweden. One of my favorite stops was Hemslojd, Lindsborg's iconic Scandinavian shop filled with Dala horses, wooden toys, folk art, textiles, holiday ornaments, and all things Swedish and charming.

This is also where I picked up one of my favorite souvenirs of the entire Kansas trip:

A table in the workshop with a lineup of finished red Dala horses sitting on it

A hand-painted wooden Swedish heart sign

"Welcome" on one side,
and my last name beautifully painted on the other.

And here's the part that still amazes me:

The artist hand-painted the calligraphy right there in the workshop, creating this gorgeous custom piece in about 15 minutes while I wandered around the shop. She was unbelievably talented, and just as friendly, chatting with visitors between brushstrokes like it was the easiest thing in the world.

A table with blue Swedish style heart signs, a painting area, and unfinished wooden mini Dala horses
A gray haired woman sitting at her work table in the workshop with paint supplies spread around

The result? Absolutely stunning. Whimsical, traditional, beautifully detailed… something you immediately know is meant to be treasured. It now hangs proudly in my home and makes me smile every time I walk past it.

If you're looking for a meaningful, handmade keepsake from Lindsborg, Kansas, start at Hemslojd. It's like stepping into a Scandinavian wonderland, only this one is right in the heart of Kansas.
