Do you have any idea how many times Hagrid’s rock cakes appear or are at least mentioned in the Harry Potter books? My count is at least four out of the seven main books in the series.

Whenever Harry, Ron, and Hermione head down to Hagrid’s cabin, they are inevitably served Hagrid’s homemade rock cakes. Now, they quickly find out Hagrid’s rock cakes almost break their teeth, but try/pretend to eat them anyway soas not to hurt Hagrid’s feelings.

So, I have to tell you up front, this keto rock cakes recipe does not completely compare to Hagrid’s. For one thing, these rock cakes don’t break your teeth or feel as hard and heavy as literal rocks. You can actually bite into them!

The outside has a bit of a crunch as you bite into the melt in your mouth center. Mmmm… I have to say, this is one of my favorite keto Harry Potter recipes!

This is Ron,” Harry told Hagrid, who was pouring boiling water into a large teapot and putting rock cakes onto a plate. “Another Weasley, eh?” said Hagrid, glancing at Ron’s freckles. I spent half me life chasin’ yer twin brothers away from the forest.

Are rock cakes keto?

I think to answer this question, are rock cakes keto, first what are rock cakes?

Traditionally, rock cakes are a British light and crumbly tea-time snack. They are also called rock buns and are similar to scones, but with a more mottled surface, like a rock! The bonus with rock cakes is that they are super-easy to make. They are a great recipe for children to help with or make themselves with a bit of supervision.

Another thing, did I mention they’re amazingly delicious? Well, at least I think so.

Rock cakes were very popular during war-time because they take less sugar and eggs to make than other tea cakes. Also, they usually have raisins or dried currants or whatever dried fruit is on hand.

What?! Raisins?? Raisins aren’t keto!

True, but before someone jumps all over this recipe, the raisins are optional in the keto version. In addition, a small amount will not add many carbs and will be fine on a low carb diet as long as they’re figured in.

Other options include freeze-dried strawberries, blueberries, sugar-free dried or fresh cranberries, it’s up to you!

But Aunt Petunia didn’t know what was hidden under the loose floorboard upstairs. She had no idea that Harry was not following the diet at all. The moment he had got wind of the fact that he was expected to survive the summer on carrot sticks, Harry had sent Hedwig to his friends with pleas for help, and they had risen to the occasion magnificently. Hedwig had returned from Hermione’s house with a large box stuffed full of sugar-free snacks. (Hermione’s parents were dentists.) Hagrid, the Hogwarts gamekeeper, had obliged with a sack full of his own homemade rock cakes. (Harry hadn’t touched these; he had had too much experience of Hagrid’s cooking.) Mrs. Weasley, however, had sent the family owl, Errol, with an enormous fruitcake and assorted meat pies.

🔪 Instructions on how to make keto rock cakes

Rock cakes are incredibly easy to make, and our keto version is nearly as simple. First of all, get out all the equipment and ingredients to make the keto rock cakes, or keto rock buns, whichever you choose to call them.

Then, preheat the oven to 325 degrees F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone liners.

Next, in a large bowl, whisk together the almond flour, coconut flour, sweetener, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and ground cloves. I love these spices!

After that, use a pastry cutter, fork, or food processor to cut in the cubed butter. Mix it in with the pastry cutter, or process it all on pulse on the food processor until the butter is in small pea-sized pieces.

Mixing the ingredients for the keto rock cakes

Now, pour in the heavy cream, beaten eggs, and vanilla extract and continue to mix or pulse until the mixture comes together in a wet dough. Then fold in the dried fruit until it’s evenly dispersed if you’re using raisins or another. As I mentioned earlier, if you don’t want to use raisins, they can be left out entirely.

Otherwise, feel free to substitute freeze-dried strawberries, blueberries, sugar-free dried or fresh cranberries, dried currants, or other dried fruit.

💭 Top tip – keto rock cakes recipe

Use an ice cream scoop! Yes, I love using an ice cream scoop with a trigger to evenly distribute batter for muffins, cookies, you name it!

In the case of keto rock cakes, this is the perfect tool to use for a uniform shape and size.

So, take an ice cream scoop and use it to place 10 scoops of dough onto the baking sheets, at least two inches apart. Or they can also be shaped by hand.

⏲️ Baking time

Now, bake for 20-25 minutes at 325 degrees F. Ovens and ingredients do vary so I would advise checking them before then as well, start around 18 minutes. Pull them out and after that let cool on the pan for at least 15 minutes. Then, drumroll please!, serve warm with a cup of tea. They are the perfect keto snacks for a Harry Potter-themed book or birthday party. Go Gryffindor!

Hagrid!” said Harry, “that Gringotts break-in happened on my birthday! It might’ve been happening while we were there!” There was no doubt about it, Hagrid definitely didn’t meet Harry’s eyes this time. He grunted and offered him another rock cake

🥣 How to store

It’s best to store any leftovers in an air-tight container. They will last longer in the refrigerator as with any other almond or coconut flour based bread. The rock cakes will be good for up to about a week.

Also, if you wish, freeze the rock cakes in an air-tight freezer container. After that, simply take them out one at a time when you want a delicious keto breakfast or snack.

Set the rock cake out about half an hour before you’d like to eat it. The low carb rock buns are best warmed slightly in the oven (or microwave) with a cup of tea or coffee. Then you can sit and imagine yourself in Hagrid’s cabin hanging out with our favorite trio.

Hagrid’s hut looked out of the darkness. There were no lights, no sound of Fang scrabbling at the door, his bark booming in welcome. All those visits to Hagrid, and the gleam of the copper kettle on the fire, and rock cakes and giant grubs, and his great, bearded face, and Ron vomiting slugs, and Hermione helping him save Norbert…

🧙‍♂️ Keto Harry Potter recipes

I am so excited about this series of keto Harry Potter recipes! My son and I just finished reading through the entire Harry Potter series of books. Of course, it was then necessary to watch all the movies and experiment with all the foods loved by our Hogwarts friends!

Our first recipe was Harry’s favorite dessert, the Keto Treacle Tart. Even if you haven’t tried a treacle tart in the past, this is a delicious dessert with a buttery treacle lemon flavor.

I really, really enjoy these!! As a T1D I am always on the lookout for sweets that I can have guilt-free. I added a bit of unsweetened coconut, walnut pieces and dried cranberries and they were wonderful!

I made these cakes and according to Fitnesspal they're coming in at 15.5 carbs per cake?

Lauren

Saturday 13th of November 2021

So much can vary with the exact ingredients and brands used. Without the raisins, I come up with 5 carbs per cake, or 2 net carbs subtracting the fiber. I also remove erythritol from the final carb count and net carb count because does not affect my own blood glucose levels. Definitely, figure your own nutrition facts for your personal macros, but this is what I use for me and my family. You can also take a look at the nutrition disclaimer at the end of the post.

I’ve made this recipe, it lists eggs in the ingredients but not when to add them. Can you please advise.

Add the beaten eggs at the same time as the heavy cream and vanilla.

In addition to above, at the beginning of the recipe, step 1, it states to preheat the oven to 325 degrees F but at the end in step 7 it states to bake at 350 degrees F. I took it to be 325 seeing as almond flour burns quickly.

The correct temperature is 325 degrees F.

Hi there Thankyou for this recipe - one cake I do miss baking and eating but no longer. I appreciate the effort you went to to create this recipe but I have an issue here. Two eggs are listed in the ingredients however are not mentioned in the method. So do we need the eggs or not? I believe not because my rock cakes spread like biscuits so maybe there was too much liquid? Otherwise if eggs are included, why did my rock cakes spread? Thank you kindly.

@Lauren, Thanks Lauren. I've noted your suggestions on my sheet so next time I bake them I'll see how I go.

Lauren

The eggs are added at the same time as the cream and then vanilla. Different brands of ingredients such as almond and coconut flour can vary in the absorption of the liquid. I've not had them spread, but if your batter seems too runny and doesn't hold its shape when you scoop it onto the pan, cut back on the liquid or add two tablespoons of coconut flour and mix it in.
