Harry Potter and his friends Ron, Hermione, and Hagrid love to gather around the table at Hogwarts for a feast. They celebrate every feeling of joy or sorrow with food–and they always indulge in dessert!

The Harry Potter series is full of yummy-sounding recipes like treacle tart, chocolate frogs, butterbeer, Hagrid’s rock cakes…and the list goes on.

And while these are all great treats that make any witch or wizard feel right at home in J.K Rowling’s magical world, we don’t want you to go hungry just because you’re following a keto diet (or if you have dietary restrictions).

That’s why I’ve created this recipe for Keto Cauldron Cakes inspired by Harry Potter!

What she did have were Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum, Chocolate Frogs, Pumpkin Pasties, Cauldron Cakes, Licorice Wands, and a number of other strange things Harry had never seen in his life.

What is a keto diet and what are its benefits?

The ketogenic diet, also known as the keto diet, is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. It forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates for energy. This process produces chemicals called ketones that provide energy for your brain without raising blood sugar levels. Ketosis can be achieved through fasting or by eating a very strict low-carbohydrate diet.

The ketogenic diet was originally developed in the 1920s to help reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures. Over the years, it has been used for numerous other diseases including diabetes, obesity, and even cancer.

🧙‍♂️ Cauldron Cakes in Harry Potter Books

The cauldron cakes in the Harry Potter books have sparked much debate! Some people think they are doughnuts, some people think they are pancakes and others still think they are just regular cakes. We’re not sure what these tasty treats really are, but we know for sure that we want them!

Here is an easy-to-make Keto wizarding recipe for Keto Cauldron Cakes. This is my take on those delicious treats found throughout the Harry Potter books. Basically, they are keto chocolate cupcakes turned upside down, filled with cream, and dipped in sugar-free chocolate to make them look like cauldrons.

🧙‍♂️ Love!! They are rather perfect for a Halloween party or Harry Potter-themed event.

Keto Cauldron Cakes have all the flavors you’d find in a regular cauldron cupcake – chocolate and cream, but they’re made Keto-friendly for those of us doing Keto.

🔪 Instructions: how to make keto cauldron cupcakes

Keto cauldron cupcakes are perfect for any special occasion. They’re flavorful and festive!

These low carb chocolate cupcakes are decorated to look like spooky cauldrons. The dark, rich chocolate flavor is topped with vanilla cream cheese filling to represent the bubbling liquid inside the cauldron! Then it’s decorated with Keto-friendly chocolate and sprinkles.

This recipe makes 12 Keto Cauldron Cakes.

To begin, bake 12 keto chocolate cupcakes. Use the Keto Chocolate Cupcakes recipe from Explorer Momma, or any other you prefer.

Second, use the tip of a vegetable peeler to hollow out a small hole in the bottom of each cupcake. This will create a place for the cream filling and the look of a magical cauldron. Simply leave them on a pan or cooling rack and set them aside for now.

How to pipe keto chocolate decorations

While the cupcakes are cooling, it’s time to make the keto chocolate decorations! Don’t be scared; it’s really quite easy. All you have to do is prepare a baking sheet and line it with parchment paper or a silicone liner.

Then melt half a cup of chocolate chips. This can be done either over a double-boiler or in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stir, repeat, until they are completely melted and smooth (but not burnt!).

💭 Top tip – zipper bags for piping

After that, spoon the melted chocolate into a piping bag. If you don’t have piping bags and tips or just don’t feel like cleaning them after, you can easily use a plastic zipper bag for this step. Snip a small hole in the corner of the zipper bag and pipe 24 small “C” shapes to use as the cauldron handles.

Once those are finished, then pipe 12 straight lines with a slightly larger circle at the bottom to create the cauldron spoons. I usually make a few extra in case some don’t turn out quite like I like or oops! they get eaten.

If there’s any extra chocolate left, go ahead and create any other chocolate decorations you wish! Now place the pan in the refrigerator to set or harden the chocolate.

How to make the sugar-free chocolate coating

For a well-used metal-like look for the cauldron, coat it with a layer of sugar-free chocolate coating. The kids will want to make it just like those from Hogwarts’ very own Potions Classroom!

To make the coating, first melt the chocolate chips over a double boiler with the coconut oil, stirring continuously. This can also be done in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time and stirring after.

Next, once the chocolate is completely melted and mixed with the coconut oil, whisk in the heavy cream.

Then dip the top and bottom of each cupcake in the chocolate mixture to coat the cauldrons, leaving the middle cake portion exposed.

But wait!!

Before setting the cupcake down, create a base for the cauldron.

How to create a low carb chocolate base for the cauldron cake

Again, it’s not hard! Use three chocolate chips to create the “feet” for each cauldron. Place the three chocolate chips in a triangle shape on the baking pan, and set the dipped cupcake upside down on the chocolate chips to create the feet, or base, of the cauldron.

In addition, at this same time, use the coating as a sort of glue to apply the chilled chocolate cauldron handles. There are two total for each keto cake, one on each side of the cauldron.

Leave them on the baking pan to set. To speed up the process, place them in the refrigerator.

How to make the keto cream filling

While the chocolate on the cauldrons sets, take out a medium to a large-sized bowl and use a hand mixer to blend together the cream cheese, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and sweetener.

Mix it all up for 1-2 minutes or until everything is evenly incorporated. Then spoon or pipe about one tablespoon of filling into the hole previously made on the bottom of each cupcake. It should already be coated in chocolate around the hole so the filling will look like the cauldron contents boiling!

Sugar free cream cheese filling

After that, decorate with a few sugar-free sprinkles on top of the filling on each cauldron cupcake. Make your own keto sprinkles or purchase ready-made keto sprinkles. Finish them up and place a chocolate spoon in each cauldron or add any other decorations you want!

🥣 How to store

It’s best to keep any leftover cauldron cakes in the refrigerator or freezer. They’re also great to keep in the freezer and pull out one a day for a quick keto snack or meal on the go. Yes, I may eat a cupcake for breakfast every now and then!

They will keep in an airtight container or zipper bag for up to a week in the fridge. Or, they’ll be good for about a month in the freezer.

You can let the keto cauldron cake sit out a while to thaw or place one in an airtight container in the refrigerator the night before you want to eat it. I don’t advise using a microwave to thaw these as the cream and chocolate may melt before the cake thaws!
