Is teriyaki chicken keto?

Traditional teriyaki chicken is not keto. It has sugar and other ingredients that increase the carb level and make it not-so keto-friendly. However, with a few tweaks, it’s easy to enjoy this traditional keto teriyaki chicken bowl at home.

In our ketofied recipe, there are only 2 net carbs, 10 grams of fat, and 31 grams of protein.

This does not include the cauliflower rice, so be sure to add that on if you choose to use it.

I have fond memories of running across town to grab my favorite chicken teriyaki bowl. I’m not sure that little restaurant still exists.

However, now I think it tastes even better at home, and it’s really not difficult to make. Why not give it a go?

Now, what do you need to make keto teriyaki chicken? Let’s get started.

🍽 Equipment needed for low carb teriyaki chicken

First off, get out all the kitchen gadgets and equipment needed. I like it when things are close at hand and ready to go. If you’ve pre-made the keto teriyaki sauce, get that out as well.

When selecting any ingredients, buy as fresh as you can, and organic if possible. Always read the labels in the grocery store. It’s important to look out for added sugar or other ingredients that may add carbs as preservatives or fillers, especially in sauces or salad dressings. That’s why I prefer to make my own, like low carb teriyaki sauce or my favorite keto salad dressing – lemon poppy seed.

🔪 Instructions

Are we ready? I absolutely love this dish and would happily eat it several times a week.

To begin, make sure you have out all the ingredients and equipment you’ll need.

💭 Top tip

To make life easier and save time, I like to make the keto teriyaki sauce and let it simmer at the same time I make the chicken teriyaki. Of course, it can also be made beforehand and kept in a jar in the refrigerator.

Jar of keto teriyaki sauce with broccoli

Warm the teriyaki sauce in a small saucepan over medium low heat, or if you’re making it at the same time, let it simmer.

Next, heat the extra-virgin olive (or avocado) oil in a large pan over medium heat. Make sure the chicken is chopped into bite-sized pieces, three-fourths of an inch to an inch squared.

Salt and pepper the chicken, then spoon it into the frying pan and stir fry, stirring occasionally with a spatula until lightly browned and crisp, about 3-4 minutes.

After that, pour the keto teriyaki sauce over the chicken and let simmer for another 5 minutes. Let it have a nice bath and absorb the sauce a bit.

Then, if you’d like to also coat the broccoli in the sauce, add in the steamed broccoli. Alternatively, it can be served on the side.

The sugar-free chicken teriyaki recipe will make four servings total. If you’d like, also serve with a half cup steamed cauliflower rice per person. Although it’s not necessary I like both the cauliflower rice and steamed broccoli.

Last but not least, garnish with sliced green onions for a bit of flavor and color.

🥣 How to store teriyaki chicken keto style

The keto teriyaki chicken can be stored in the refrigerator in an air-tight container for up to a week. I like to use a glass, air-tight container that stacks well so my refrigerator looks and feels organized.

Also, if you’re meal prepping, the recipe can even be frozen in an air-tight freezer container. Just be sure to use it within a month for best flavor.

What is low carb chicken teriyaki?

In case you didn’t know, teriyaki is a Japanese word. If you divide it in two, teri means luster, and yaki means to grill or broil. It really refers to the way to cook the chicken. However, here in the United States it’s come to refer more to this wonderful sauce.
