🍄 What is the healthiest way to fry mushrooms?

The healthiest, not to mention the easiest, way to fry mushrooms is by using an air fryer. Air frying uses a fraction of the oil that traditional deep-frying does, and it also circulates hot air evenly around the food, resulting in a crispier texture with fewer calories.

Also, air fryers are incredibly easy to use – just preheat the oven, place the prepared mushrooms in the basket, and allow them to cook for several minutes until they’re perfectly air fried.

Air fryers are truly amazing. I even just learned you can actually make air fryer poached eggs! So many ways to use them.

What mushrooms are best for keto?

The best mushrooms to use for keto are cremini, shiitake, white button, and portobello mushrooms. These varieties have lower carb contents while still providing plenty of umami flavor. Other types of mushrooms will also work, but they may contain higher amounts of carbohydrates.

You may also see cremini mushrooms spelled as “crimini” or referred to as “baby bella mushrooms” or “baby portobellos” when you are browsing mushrooms in the grocery store.

🥘 Ingredients in this low carb air fryer mushrooms recipe

When making low carb mushrooms in the air fryer, it is important to select the right ingredients in order to end up with a delicious and healthy dish. Here is a list of what to look for when selecting each ingredient:

Keto Mushrooms

Look for cremini (baby bella) or white button mushrooms; they are small and have a light and mellow flavor that pairs nicely with the rest of the ingredients. Make sure that they are fresh mushrooms, so firm and not slimy, as this could indicate spoilage.

Garlic & Onion Granules/Powder

Look for high-quality granules or powder. If possible, try to find organic garlic and onion powders.

Smoked Paprika

I like organic smoked paprika that has been made with oak wood chips, as this will impart a mild smoky flavor without being too overpowering. Avoid brands with artificial flavoring or added ingredients as it will affect the taste and carbs.

Salt & Pepper

Select coarse ground salt and pepper for the best flavor and texture in your dish. Try to opt for unrefined sea salt or I also like Redmond’s Real Salt, which contains more minerals than regular table salt.

Avocado Oil or Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

Avocado oil is great because it is heat stable and can tolerate high temperatures without breaking down into unhealthy compounds like some other oils do at higher temps. Additionally, extra-virgin olive oil can help balance out the flavors in the dish while adding beneficial antioxidants and healthy fats. Use whichever you have on hand.

Melted Butter

The fresher the better. Use good quality grass-fed butter, or ghee for best results. You may also sub a butter flavored coconut oil or avocado oil for a vegan option.

Dried or Fresh Parsley

Look for dried parsley flakes rather than powder so that you can experience its full flavor potential within your recipe; make sure it hasn’t been sitting around too long as older dried herbs won’t have much flavor left in them due to their volatile essential oils evaporating over time!

🔪 Instructions

Start by prepping the mushrooms. You’ll want to give them a quick clean with a damp cloth or paper towel and remove any dirt or debris. Cut the mushrooms into large uniform pieces; either halves or fourths will work as long as they’re about the same sized pieces.

Next, get your air fryer ready. Preheat it to 390 degrees F (or about 200 degrees C).

Whilst that’s heating up, grab a bowl and whisk together the garlic granules, onion granules, smoked paprika, salt, ground black pepper, avocado oil (or extra-virgin olive oil), and melted butter. Mix it up until all ingredients are incorporated together nicely. Now add the mushroom pieces to the bowl and toss them gently to ensure they are evenly coated with all of the seasonings and oil.

Air fry time

When the air fryer is hot and ready (after about 5 minutes), place the mushroom pieces in an even layer in the air fryer basket. Set the timer for 7-9 minutes at 390°F (or 200°C) and let them cook away until they’re cooked through.

Once done, sprinkle on some freshly chopped parsley, sliced green onions, or other fresh herbs to garnish. Then serve warm as a delicious side dish or part of a main course.

💭 Additional top tips

  1. To really kick up the flavor you can add other spices or herbs such as thyme, oregano, and/or basil to the mix for a truly unique taste.
  2. For best results make sure all the mushroom pieces are cut into similar sizes so they cook evenly in your air fryer.
  3. These mushrooms pair perfectly with grilled steak or fish for an indulgent meal that’s great for any special occasion. Serve them up with a side salad and voila – you’ve got yourself a complete meal! Not only is it low carb but also mouthwateringly delicious – what more could you ask for?

🙋‍♂️ But how do you make air fryer breaded mushrooms?

If you want more of a crispy coating on the air fryer fried mushrooms, after they’re coated in the oil and spice mixture, coat them in almond flour or ground pork rinds before you air fry.

🥣 How to store air fryer garlic mushrooms

These mushrooms can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. When reheating, pop them back into the air fryer basket or oven at 350°F (175°C) until they are warmed through and have regained their original crispiness.
